BEAR SANCTUARY Ninh Binh is home to a total of 23 bears including former bile bears Nhi Nho (formally known as Hai Chan), Thai Van, Thai Giang, Misa, Binh Yen, May, Hoa Lan, Hoa Tra, Long, Trang, Keo, Lim, Dieu, San, Khoai Lang, Chuoi, Tao, Le, Lili, Lulu, Lac and two rescued bear cubs from the illegal wildlife trade, Mi and Tam. Further bear rescue missions are already being planned.
Before being introduced to their outdoor enclosures, each of the bears recovers in quarantine and are then brought to bear houses. After this adjustment period, each rescued bear is then released into the beautiful outdoors of the sanctuary.
For the two bear cubs, Mi and Tam, their situation and recovery has been much different. They received round- the- clock care from our veterinary experts, which included bottle feedings with a special milk once every three hours! And since they first arrived at our sanctuary, they have grown much stronger. In May, they were released into an outdoor enclosure of their very own. You can read more about their story and recovery here.
The first construction phase of BEAR SANCTUARY Ninh Binh started in December 2016. The sanctuary has four spacious outdoor enclosures for 10 to 14 animals each, two bear houses with interior rooms, a quarantine station, a veterinary unit, a feeding kitchen, and an administrative building.
Currently, BEAR SANCTUARY Ninh Binh offers suitable living conditions for up to 44 bears. With your help, we hope to expand this to 100 bears in 2020.
In the meantime, additional bile bear rescue missions are being planned. Make sure to follow our social media channels and subscribe to our e-mail newsletter for important updates.

How to get to the BEAR SANCTUARY
Situation in Vietnam
Even though the production of bear bile and the trade of bear products is forbidden by law in Vietnam, bear bile farming and illegal bile extraction still exists.
The Vietnamese government has taken firm legislative steps to end bear farming in Vietnam, however, approximately 800 bears – mainly Asiatic black bears (Ursus thibetanus) – are still living under poor conditions on more than 250 bear farms. These animals suffer in tiny metal cages, spending their days in a vegetated state, half-starved and dehydrated.
With the newly built BEAR SANCTUARY Ninh Binh, FOUR PAWS aims to contribute significantly to end bear farming in Vietnam.
The sanctuary supports the Vietnamese government's efforts to prohibit bear bile farming by providing a species- appropriate place for any confiscated, or voluntarily handed over, bears to be taken in and cared for. Our dedicated staff are wholeheartedly committed to helping each and every bear recover.
